The Wizarding World is full of tremendous sorcerers, some better than others, and some better than the best; some who believe in being good and doing good, and some who believe in being evil and doing evil as well. Brought about by theHarry Potterbooks and film series and later continued by theFantastic Beastsprojects by the remarkable J. K. Rowling, the Wizarding universe holds characters and secrets beyond anyone’s wildest imagination.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

But out of all the wizards that exist in that vast, vast universe, who is the most powerful? Is it Lord Voldemort? Or perhaps the boy who lived aka the titular character Harry Potter himself, considering he defeated the Dark Lord? The answer is: none, for the most powerful wizard is a character even greater than either of these two.

Although Potter, Granger, and Riddle, all are incredibly talented in their own respective places, none of them are powerful or even close enough to defeat Dumbledore in a duel. As revealed in the books and film series, the Headmaster was frequently cited as the only wizard that the Dark Lord ever feared.

(L-R): Voldemort in Harry Potter and Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts

As Elphias Doge reveals inHarry Potter, Albus Dumbledore was already referred to as‘the most brilliant student ever seen’at Hogwarts just at the end of his first year. Moreover, the numerous accolades earned during his youth are further proof of his incomparable intelligence.

He may have begun his career as a professor at Hogwarts because of his family tragedy (his sister Ariana died during his youthful duel with Gellert Grindelwald and Dumbledore felt responsible for that), but even as a teacher, he made some of the most important discoveries for the Wizarding world.

Furthermore, Dumbledore also became the master of the Elder Wand having defeated Grindlewald and was awarded an Order of Merlin (First Class). If that wasn’t enough, he also led the Order of the Phoenix group and even found and destroyed multiple of Voldemort’s Horcruxes, thus proving his extraordinary importance in the Wizarding World as the most powerful wizard to ever exist.

Voldemort And Grindlewald Still Rank Second To Dumbledore

Since Albus Dumbledore is the most powerful wizard in the sorcerers’ worldHarry Potterinitiated, he was obviously much stronger than both of the most infamous Dark wizards in the Wizarding World’s history: Tom Marvolo Riddle aka the Dark Lord aka Lord Voldemort, and Gellert Grindelwald.

First, Voldemort: He was indeed one of the best wizard students to have graduated from Hogwarts and‘the most dangerous Dark wizard of all time’at the same time. Being the first and only wizard to have created multiple Horcruxes of himself and incited the First and Second Wizarding Wars, he would have been nearly unstoppable had it not been for Harry Potter’s prophecy.

But even if that prophecy of his defeat at the hands of the boy who lived had never come to be, Dumbledore still would have easily succeeded in defeating the Dark Lord in a duel with his exceptional intelligence and knowledge.

Then comes Gellert Grindelwald, who holds the title of being the most powerful Dark wizard preceding Voldemort as well as an almost equally brilliant and talented sorcerer as Dumbledore. But even as the master of the super powerful Elder Wand, he faced his end at the hands of Dumbledore in their legendary duel described as‘unmatched’in the Wizarding World’s history by Elphias Doge.
