Taika Waititi, who boasts an extensive independent film background, is known for his out-of-the-box takes, which have spelled mixed results for him.

The way he mixed comedy with the serious subject of Nazism inJojo Rabbitwon him an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, while his decision to move away from the action-laden themes of most Marvel movies in favor of silly humor inThor: Love And Thunderinvited plenty of backlash in his direction. Taika Waititi Receives Backlash for His ‘Guy Who Wrote the Bible’ Comment
Taika Waititiis in the news for directing the recently releasedNext Goal Wins. The biographical sports comedy-drama, with Michael Fassbender in a leading role, is about the infamously bad American Samoa soccer team, which lost a 2001 FIFA match 31-0.
Fassbender portrays coach Thomas Rongen, who’s brought in to change the fortunes of that team ahead of their clash with Tonga in a World Cup qualifier, more than a decade after their historic loss. The underdog comedy has earned mixed reviews so far, with many finding it hard to enjoy the journey the worst team in the world took in their bid to win their first international match due to several sequences that blur the line between what’s true and what’s Waititi’s imagination.

When asked about his decision to take so much artistic license, the Oscar-winning filmmaker joked:
“I mean, in the Bible, they took real-life things that happened and then they added, you know, magic,”he said (viaIndieWire).“I’m just like the guy who wrote the Bible, bro.”

As expected, many users on X didn’t take this comment from the 48-year-old too well.
