When Jason Momoa was initially cast as Aquaman, it raised many eyebrows, for how could a rugged, gruff, and extremely buffed-up guy portray the blond-haired clean-cut blue-eyed character. But since his first-ever appearance, anyone who doubted him as Aquaman knew that they were wrong, extremely wrong. It was precisely his ruggedness and feisty personality that made Aquaman as a character very entertaining to watch.

However, with the DC universe in the hands of James Gunn and Peter Safran, it seems unlikely he’d be able to continue playing the Atlantean. And it is a fact that even he acknowledged, revealing that the chances of him coming back afterAquaman and the Lost Kingdomare not very promising.

During a recent interview withET Online, Momoa got candid about his fate as Aquaman. Stating that the character makes his ‘heart smile‘, he revealed it isn’t in his hands to decide how long he can play his fan-favorite character but rather it is a decision that Gunn and Safran would be making.

“I don’t necessarily want it to be the end… [but] I don’t think it’s really, like, a choice… The truth of it is, I mean, if the audience loves it, then there’s a possibility. But right now, I’m like, ‘It’s not looking too good.'”

Jason Momoa Is Open to Playing Aquaman for a Long Long Time

While DC’s beloved action hero has doubts about returning to his character afterAquaman and the Lost Kingdom, he is open to playing the King of Seven Seas for as long as he can. Speaking to ET Online, he addressed how it was hard to portray a whole new interpretation of the character so different than its traditional comic-book counterpart. But it was also a process he thoroughly enjoyed and thus wants to continue playing Aquaman for as long as he can.

“I love this character and [I would want to] play it for a long time. I kind of see where I would want it to go. And even in the next 10 years or so, like there’s a lot of cool things they can do. And I do enjoy the role and the world. So, I mean, it just comes down to if people love it.”

While he acknowledges that his return may be nearly impossible, the actor continues to hope that people’s love and support might help change his fate as Aquaman.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdomwill be in theatres on Dec 22.
