Sony’s latest announcement about a new PS5 Slim model has turned the console into the talk of the town among the gaming communities all across the world. There have been various spec comparisons between the recently announced variant and the original edition, especially regarding their sizes, weights, and other physical attributes.
However, there was one aspect that was proving to be a bit worrisome, considering the comparatively smaller size of the upcoming version of the PlayStation 5.
Fortunately, the question of whether the new PS5 Slim variants would still support storage expansions with SSDs has officially been answered by Sony, much to the relief of PlayStation 5 players.
The New PS5 Slim Will Continue to Support SSD Expansion
One of the standout features of the newly announced PS5 Slim was that its storage space has been significantly increased compared to the PlayStation 5 launch model. Sony’s upcoming console variant will now include 1TB of storage space, but even if that does not seem to be enough for some, there is no reason to worry.
Gamers who do not want to keep deleting games to make room for new ones and are fond of inserting additional storage space into their consoles can rest assured that the Slim edition will be fully compatible with NVMe SSDs.

To make the comparison between the storage spaces of both variants clearer, the PlayStation 5 base model has an 825 GB SSD installed. This means that the upcoming PS5 Slim will initially have a whopping 175GB of extra storage space. The additional storage space is undeniably one of the most important aspects of modern gaming since most of the latest AAA video games usually take up more than 100GB to be stored on a console.
For example, only the playable demo for the upcomingCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3carried a size of 24GB, and players will reportedly have to save up around 100GB of space to download and play the actual game when it releases. Still, there is still significant unclarity over just how much of the announced 1TB of storage for the PS5 Slim will be usable, especially considering how the storage was divided for the PlayStation 5 launch model.
In fact, although the base model had 875GB of storage space, more than 100GB was preoccupied by console software and other programs, leaving only 667GB available for users.
Thankfully, even though the upcoming PS5 Slim is relatively smaller in size, it will continue to support additional SSD storage expansion, just like the base PlayStation 5 model.
There Are No Drastic Changes With the New PS5 Slim Model
A representative and spokesperson from PlayStation toldIGNthrough an email that the upcoming PS5 Slim edition will not be undergoing any drastic “changes,” which means that it is not going to feature anything too different from the original base model. It also implies that players who get their hands on the new variant of the PlayStation 5 will still be able to easily insert and remove M.2 SSDs from the console when it releases since it completely supports additional storage space.
The only required specifications that the SSD must have are to be a PCIe Gen 4 version, along with meeting the minimum read speed of 5,500 MB/s.

In addition to this significant PS5 Slim feature, another recent event that solidified the fact that Sony is not ditching expanded storage took place for the base PlayStation 5 model. The latest major firmware update that was recently released for the PS5 base edition actually added further support so that players could attach up to 8 TB of extra storage space through external SSDs. That is around as much space as would be required to installRed Dead Redemption 2fifty-three times.
It’s probably unlikely for most players to require that much space on their consoles, but it is always nice to have the option of having as much storage capacity as physically possible. It goes without saying that there are plenty of much cheaper alternatives available for gamers looking for just 1-2 TB SSDs for their PlayStation 5s, which is usually more than enough.
