Looking over the past few years it is a little difficult not to get lost in the vast amount of live-service games readily available to the gaming community, but PlayStation alongside their London Studio have been working behind the scenes to shoot their shot in a chance to stand tall alongside the big boys of the genre.

Knowing games likeFortniteare still dominating the market and continue to add characters/seasons/weapons and an ever-growing expansion of content, it is a little difficult not to get lost in the ether. Especially given thatFortnitenow draws from third-party companies like Marvel and also locked-in celebrities such as Lebron James and Ariana Grande to their roster of playable characters, nothing is really off limits.
PlayStation and Live-Service Games are the Future
Regardless, Sony continues to push ahead with their attempt at a live-service title that is focusing on a fantasy-based game that contains a Hero Roster / Spells and Melee Combat. This is all that is known at the moment with the game currently still in development.
Previously the London-based PlayStation studio had produced a large majority of the VR titles seen on the PlayStation 4, alongside the well-receivedGetawayseries, so knowing that they are developing a new title based around London and this also being their home ground will give the location of the title a big head start. With previous games such asGrand Theft Auto: LondonandThe Getawaybeing on the PlayStation it seems to be the console to go to when promoting UK-based gaming.

The title of the game is still unknown, but being backed by Sony we can only speculate on the scale they are aiming for, alongside their announcement of having at least 10x Live-Service titles delivered by March 2026 this will be the first of many to come, this also may see the console cement itself into this market and nail multiple titles based off its potential success.

Back in July 2022, Sony acquired the juggernaut studio Bungiewhose titles includedHalo 1/2/3andHalo ReachandHalo ODST, with these games they managed to deliver the Xbox its signature character with the Master Chief and it paved the way for Xbox Live and online gaming in a huge way. Universally praised and loved, Bungie then went on to developDestinyandDestiny 2very much keeping within the same genre of FPS these games are also heavily praised and have continued to expand that world via DLC.
Now with Bungie being purchased back in 2022 by Sony, we can’t help but believe their input into the games being developed via live-service could be a valuable asset. Bungie’s newest titleMarathonwill be multi-platform despite Sony now owning the company.

Given that the game is currently in production and it has been announced with little to no detail and that no title has been cemented as of yet the hype behind it can only be measured by what has been mentioned to us regarding its content. That being a hero roster, the setting of the game and its theme.

PlayStation is no stranger to the gaming market so knowing the number of exclusive characters they currently have at their disposal can be invaluable when producing a live-service title, especially seeing how popular just ONE character inclusion could be on any game, considering that we are receiving a hero’s roster with this game we can see the potential to make a push to include some well known established characters pulled from some of their other popular titles to secure fans and make the game a success from the word go.
Other titles currently out there draw from popular titles and characters to draw new audiences to their service.Call Of Dutyrecently added characters from the popular Amazon seriesThe Boys, playable characters included areStarlight,HomelanderandBlack Noir. This could be seen as a cash grab or a smart marketing opportunity consideringThe Boysis at its hype of popularity at the moment with season 4 and theAmazon Primespin-offGen Von the horizon but knowing the audience for Call Of Duty are they likely to fall for it?
