Pixel 10 May Leave Exynos for MediaTek Impacting Battery, AI, Performance

Google’s Pixel phones have always sparked discussions – sometimes fortheir AI featureswhile other times for other choice of processors. When they launched the Tensor chip with thePixel 6series, partnered with Samsung’s modem, it didn’t perform as expected. The device faced significant heating and battery issues. Many users reported that the performance was below expectations based on their feedback. These problems continue to plague the Pixel 9 devices runningTensor G4 processors.

What Changes are Being Done?

The upcoming changes are set to be significant, especially in terms of the processors and modems used. Google is reportedly moving away fromSamsung’s Exynos modem. The change comes after years of complaints about heating and performance issues, particularly with the Exynos modems in the earlier Tensor-powered devices. According to a report, Google is now looking to incorporate MediaTek’s T900 modem in the Pixel 10 series, which is expected to be based on the 3GPP Release 17 5G specification.

Additionally, Google is also shifting away fromSamsungfor the manufacturing of its Tensor G5 chipset. Instead, TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) is expected to take over the production of the new Tensor chip on the more advanced 3nm process node. The new modem fromMediaTekand the partnership with TSMC for the Tensor G5 are part of Google’s strategy to enhance the overall performance and user experience of the Pixel 10 series.

How Will It Help?

The switch to MediaTek’s T900 modem will support the 5G Release 17 standard. It will also result in better power efficiency and improved network performance, addressing the thermal and signal issues that plagued earlier Pixel devices. By opting for MediaTek’s modem, Google is not only improving battery life but also ensuring that the Pixel 10 series stays competitive compared to other flagship smartphones.

Another crucial change is the switch to TSMC’s 3nm fabrication process for the Tensor G5 chip. TSMC’s technology is considered a leader in the industry for producing power-efficient and high-performance chips. The transition from Samsung’s foundry to TSMC is expected to bring significant improvements in thermal management and power consumption. The Pixel 10 series should offer better battery life, enhanced processing power, and reduced overheating.

These strategic changes are likely to make the Pixel 10 series more appealing to both long-time Pixel fans and new users. It should position the Pixel 10 series as a strong competitor in the smartphone market not only in camera but also in performance and battery departments.

AI Capabilities in Pixel 10

Google’s AI and software features like computational photography and real-time processing capabilities may improve significantly with MediaTek’s processing. With each new Tensor chip, Google refined its machine learning capabilities, which impacts features like Night Sight, Super Res Zoom, and live translation. These optimizations could further elevate the overall Pixel 10 experience, making it not a mere hardware upgrade.

Let’s see how the upcoming Pixel 10 series performs against its competitors, who have already established themselves in performance and other key factors.
