The new DCU chief, James Gunn has been making headlines left and right with his new strategic narrative after assuming control over the CBM franchise. Set to fulfill David Zaslav’s vision of rivaling Marvel Studios’ linear and interconnected arc spanning decades, the newly formed DC Studios has proven to be a healthy dose of a challenge for the brilliant and enigmatic writer-director. But before the new job can take hold of almost every aspect of his life and career, there is one particular voyage that the DCU boss needs to weather through before jumping the ship over to his new quarters.

James Gunn Talks About the Shortcomings of the MCU

James Gunn’s acute and niche talents have managed to impress the two greatest executive authorities of the CBM industry — Kevin Feige and David Zaslav. But the director’s journey with aliens and superheroes began with his dancing, gun-toting, space-faring Marvel adventure,Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1. The eponymous group made their debut in MCU Phase Two in 2014 and catapulted the comic characters from a nameless, unpopular, ragtag crew to one of the most beloved franchises in the Marvel fandom.

But as the chapter now draws to a close,James Gunnspeaks to his dread over the threequel and how he acknowledges all trilogies to universally fail in the third and final chapter.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 crew

“The amount of good third episodes in a trilogy, I can count them on one hand. Basically, there’s the ‘Before Sunrise’ series. ‘Lord of the Rings’. Maybe ‘Spider-Man’. But there’s just not too many good third ones.”

Guardians of the Galaxy return for one final song

It was stated between the lines that even amidst the limited solo threequel stories in existence, Marvel godfather,Robert Downey Jr.‘sIron Man 3does not make the cut in Gunn’s dictionary. The RDJ film did fail to impress the Marvel audience as well, due to the numerous loopholes that the plot left behind in the aftermath. Moreover, it’s not surprising thatNo Way Home‘s star-studded unprecedented multiversal event places somewhere in even Gunn’s roster of good trilogy finales.

The Galactic Journey Comes to an End For the Guardians

It had always been James Gunn’s vision to complete the three-chapter saga of Guardians of the Galaxyever since he first took on the franchise. Gunn calls the franchise and his work on it alongside the actors —“the biggest blessing of my life.”But no matter how excited the director was to tell the story, especially the tragic origin arc of Rocket Raccoon, the journey was surrealistically coming to an end for the weird space heroes after Gunn statedGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3would mark the final outing of the crew in their current iteration. The director claims,

“This is the big one. This is where things really happen. This is where we get to know the truth about who these characters are, and we face the biggest stakes.”

The trilogy will witness Star-Lord, Mantis, Drax, Nebula, and Rocket reprising their roles while Groot grows up from the Vol. 2 era into an adolescent version that Gunn has affectionately named “Swole Groot”. The narrative also introduces Chukwudi Iwuji’s“Shakespearean sociopath”aka High Evolutionary and the golden-skinned, enhanced, all-powerful warrior Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) who is set on a warpath to annihilate the Guardians.Zoe Saldaña‘s Gamora reprises her role as the alternate timeline version of herself.
