Mark Hamill has been the face of one of the most successful franchises of all time, playing Luke Skywalker in theStar Warsfranchise. He has been in a number of movies in the franchise, includingThe Empire Strikes Back,Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Return of the Jedi,andStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Being this famous and good at what he does, one would expect Hamill’s parents to be proud of what he does but that does not seem to be the case as the actor revealed his rocky relationship with his late, ex-navy father.

Mark Hamill’s Father Thought Comic Books Were Childish
During an interview withEsquire,Mark Hamillrevealed that he had a difficult relationship with his father. He mentioned that being a naval officer, his dad was quite authoritative and did not approve of certain interests held by the actor as a kid, adding that he was the middle child of seven children.
“I had a troubled relationship with my father,” he says, starting to recount an anecdote that has shown up in other Mark Hamill interviews. “He was a career naval officer, very authoritarian. I was the middle of seven kids. He just could not understand why I love puppets and monster movies and comic books. These were all frivolous things that I should outgrow.”He mentioned.

Hamill revealed that he was very interested in things like comic books, puppets, and monster movies growing up. While these were hobbies he quite enjoyed, they were not approved of by his father, who believed that these things were for little kids and Hamill should be outgrowing them rather than indulging them.

Mark Hamill’s Father Did Not Approve Of His Work InStar Wars
Mark Hamill did not outgrow his fascination with science-fiction and monster movies as he was cast in theStar Warsfranchise as one of the main characters. This was much to his father’s disappointment as he wish for his son to outgrow this childhood obsession with movies and wished for him to find a ‘real’ job outside the film industry.
“Towards the end, I guess we sort of… It’s funny, he was completely unimpressed with Star Wars. He kept thinking I would eventually outgrow my childhood obsession with movies and get a real job. You know what really turned him around? When Bob Hope asked me to be on his Christmas special.”mentioned Mark Hamill.

Hamill mentioned that the only way his father actually realized that theStar Warsactor was successful and turned around on his opinion about his son’s profession was when Bob Hope, the American comedian, and actor, was doing a Christmas special and asked Hamill to be a part of it.
Hamill has three children of his own, Nathan Hamill who is 43, Griffin Hamill who is 40, and Chelsea Hamill who is 34, who he raised differently than he was brought up. He mentioned that he focused on being there in the moment with his kids as well as letting them be their own people.
