Varietyreported thatStrange Worldgrossed $11.9 million domestically from 4,174 theaters over the weekend, for a total domestic gross of $18.6 million over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday. The movie has made $27.8 million worldwide. However, the domestic opening weekend receipts of $18.6 million forStrange Worldwere significantly less than the already modest $30–40 million predicted.

In this film, which was about a family of famous explorers who ventured into a strange new territory, Gyllenhaal played the voice of a forty-year-old man named Searcher Clade. In an earlier interview withDigital Spy, the actor talked about how special it was to play the role:
“I think I was so moved by it because I think, in family, there’s so much we want, right? There’s so much we want.”

Adding to his explanation of the role,A Dangerous Womanfurther added:
“We want to be understood. We want to be heard. We want to understand, and there’s so much that we won’t be able to. We’re just all searching through all the stuff to get to hopefully a connection of love, you know, and that’s what this movie is about.”
Because it included the first openly LGBTQ lead character from Walt Disney Animation Studios, the film was pulled from distribution for a limited theatrical release in some areas. Aside from its questionable marketing,Strange World‘s detractors can also point the finger at the film’s lackluster quality. Critics were split on it, giving it a 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
