While the film industry eagerly awaits the release of another Martin Scorsese-Leonardo DiCaprio collaboration (Killers of the Flower Moon), rumors of unexpected regret for their prior joint venture have started to surface.

Martin Scorsese

The Oscar-winning director, known for his meticulous perfectionism, is one of those amazing Hollywood filmmakers whose nearly every film is an epic super-hit. But as time goes on, the 80-year-old director feels a little older and worries that he might not be able to make as many movies as he has since his start in the entertainment business in 1962.

Due to this, Scorsese has also had ample time to think critically about his previous brilliant filmography as well as recall his generally negative experiences working in the industry.

Martin Scorsese Supports Anti-comic Book-movie Culture

Martin Scorsesehas yet again spoken out against the overwhelming dominance of comic book and franchise movies in the current film industry. Thus, he has seen problems with the overabundance of franchise and comic book entertainment that currently makes up a large portion of what is available to watch in a theater.

Scorsese discussed the implications of this trend in-depth in a profile interview withGQ, highlighting the urgency of preserving the core of authentic cinema.

He highlighted how this could endanger the diversity of cultures, tellingGQ:

“The danger there is what it’s doing to our culture. Because there are going to be generations now that think movies are only those—that’s what movies are.”

He specifically mentioned Christopher Nolan and the Safdie brothers as examples of innovative filmmakers who can challenge the status quo. To quote him:

“It’s gotta come from the filmmakers themselves. And you’ll have, you know, the Safdie brothers, and you’ll have Chris [Christopher] Nolan, you know what I mean? And hit ’em from all sides. Hit ’em from all sides, and don’t give up. Let’s see what you got. Go out there and do it. Go reinvent. Don’t complain about it. But it’s true, because we’ve got to save cinema.” Cinema could be anything, Scorsese said; it didn’t just have to be serious. Some Like It Hot—that was cinema, for instance. But: “I do think that the manufactured content isn’t really cinema.”

Hence, Scorsese encouraged filmmakers to keep pushing boundaries, innovating, and diversifying the cinematic landscape in light of the film industry’s struggles.

Fans will nonetheless be surprised by his upcoming filmKillers of the Flower Moon, which opens in theaters on June 18, 2025.
