In 2016’s epic film,Silence, Andrew Garfield played the role of Sebastião Rodrigues who embarks on a journey with Adam Driver’s Francisco Garupe to find their mentor, Father Ferreira who is played byLiam Neeson. Given that the duo was finding their mentor, the former decided to keep his distance from Neeson to enhance his acting in the film.

He was quite serious which is why he decided not to confront his co-star before the actual confrontation on-screen when he meets his mentor. TheBatman Beginsactor in an interview with CinemaBlend opened up about his co-star’s strange request not to meet him before their scene.
“Andrew did not want to see me until the camera turned.”

However, he opened up about cheating a bit as he showered him with a friendly hug.
“I cheated a bit, because I gave him a hug when I came on set, and he went, ‘Oh, no no. Don’t do that!’ [Laughs] And it was like, ‘Well, get over it. Act it!’ [Laughs]”

Despite Neeson giving a friendly hug to his co-star, he shared that the scene was quite“lovely”to execute due to being beautifully written. However, it was not that much of a strange request given the fact that Garfield went to some extreme ends to fully engross himself in the role.

Garfield appeared in theWTF with Marc Maronpodcast and shared about some“trippy”experiences while preparing for his Jesuit priest role. He shared that he spent a year studying Catholicism through the guidance of a real-life Jesuit priest in New York, Father James Martin.
“He became my friend and sort of spiritual director for a year.”
“I had an incredibly spiritual experience. I did a bunch of spiritual practices every day, I created new rituals for myself. I was celibate for six months and fasting a lot, because me and Adam had to lose a bunch of weight anyway.”
His performance was critically acclaimed though the film was unable to impress the audience grossing just $22 million against a production budget of $50 million.
