Estimates were increased to $78 million after it made $39.4 million on its first day.Josh Hutcherson‘s movie ended up taking the top spot at the box office with a $80 million debut.
It was the best opening weekend for a horror movie in 2023, Blumhouse’s best opening, surpassingHalloween’s$76.2 million.Five Nights at Freddy’sday and date opening weekend was the second best ever (behindBlack Widow’s $80.3 million in 2021). It is just $8 million away from becoming the highest-grossing horror film of 2023, according toThe Hollywood Handle. Meanwhile, according toDeadline,Five Nights at Freddy‘s was initially
“Eyeing a $50 million-plus start and possibly even more”.

Many exhibitors anticipated an opening weekend close to a staggering $85 million; they felt that was underselling the horror film.

Josh Hutcherson Was ‘So Excited’ AboutFive Nights At Freddy’s
Josh Hutcherson’s breakthrough performance came in theHunger Gamesfilms as Peeta.Five Nights at Freddy’scould be a boon to his career. On a $20 million budget, the film, which was based on the well-liked video game series of the same name, brought in a total of $261.2 million worldwide.
The actor shared his excitement aboutFive Nights at Freddy’s, as noted by film director Emma Tammi, who informedNBC Insider.
“He was so excited about the franchise and the animatronics and the really fun elements of Five Nights at Freddy’s. But he was also engaged on a deeper character level and did such an authentic job of portraying Mike.”
Tammi is obviously aware of her audience. In an interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, she declined to respond to questions about mythology, choosing instead to refer the questions to her devoted fans:
“That’s much more interesting than whatever my answer is going to be.”
Moreover, she teased fans with the following statement following the success of the film, though a sequel has not been announced:
“We have some loose ends that I think are going to have to come back in a sequel to be tied up.”
