Sega has just announced that it is canceling the much-awaited multiplayer shooter gameHyenas,which was under development at Creative Assembly. The company is also canceling other unannounced titles from its European studios.

Sega issued a notice about the“implementation of structural reforms in the consumer area”and announced the cancellation ofHYENASand more after the meeting of its Board of Directors, and saying that it expects to see a loss in this financial year.

Sega Cancels Highly-Anticipated HYENAS

The move was announced after the review of Sega’s game business in the meeting that was held today. Sega stated that it had decided to cancelHYENASand other unannounced titles, citing low profitability in European regions.

The company stated that it will“implement structural reforms aimed at increasing efficiency”especially at the European bases, and has reviewed the games under development at the European bases. Sega said that it has decided to cancel some of its titles and“reduce the fixed expenses.”Thenoticeread,

Sega cancels Hyenas citing lower profitability of the European region

In response to the lower profitability of the European region, we have reviewed the title portfolio of each development base in Europe and the resulting action will be to cancel “HYENAS” and some unannounced titles under development. Accordingly, we will implement a write-down of work-in-progress for titles under development.

HYENASis a multiplayer shooter game set in space and was in development at Creative Assembly. Creative Assembly is a UK-based studio popularly known for its Total War series of games. The game had five teams battling AI and each other to steal pop culture collectibles.

Was Sega Always Going to Cancel HYENAS?

The doubt about the future ofHYENASwas raised when Sega acknowledged that it was a“challenging”title. The executives were asked for an update on the game during a Q&A session and were also asked to comment about its business model and anticipated impact on earnings. The executives had said,

We are unable to talk about this title because the details have not yet been announced at this time. As this is a challenging title, we are striving to improve its quality towards the release on the front line of development. We are also making final adjustments to its business model in parallel.

Sega also said it is looking to reduce“fixed expenses at several group companies in the relevant region, centered on the Creative Assembly Ltd”and this could mean that Creative Assembly could be on the verge of being expelled.HYENASwas announced in the summer of last year and was scheduled to release this year on PC, Mac, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, as well as last-gen consoles.
