Cillian Murphy is a remarkably passionate artist. He brings similar passion to his characters even after more than 25 years of his debut. His characters have depth, profound emotion, and intensity. Murphy had made instant fanbase after featuring in the British crime drama series,Peaky Blinders, where he played the character of Tommy Shelby.

He has been a long-time collaborator of Christopher Nolan and is well-known for that too. For Murphy, it does not matter if the role is small or big in a Nolan movie, but quietly he admitted he wanted to lead a Nolan film. Of course, it is a dream shared by many actors in the industry.

How Did Cillian Murphy End Up Playing the Lead inOppenheimer?
There is no secret thatChristopher Nolanloves working withCillian Murphy. The actor auditioned for the role of Batman in Nolan’sBatman Begins, but Nolan chose him for Dr. Jonathan Crane aka Scarecrow instead. Ever since he had appeared in several Nolan movies to finally land his big breakthrough by playing one of the most popular scientists of the 20th century.
“I remember very clearly, I saw a picture of him in the newspaper,”Nolan told Rolling Stone’s Christina Newland.“It was for 28 Days Later. He had his head shaved, and those extraordinary eyes. I hadn’t seen the film. It was just the look of him, it struck me,”he added.

Playing J Robert Oppenheimer, that too in a Nolan film, is kind of a big deal, but he was Nolan’s first preference for the role. Murphy’s trait is simple, in person as well as in playing his characters. He brings raw emotions to the table with a multilayered approach to help the audience understand the intensity of the character, and Nolan agrees with that.
“Cillian has this extraordinary empathetic ability to carry an audience into a thought process. He projects an intelligence that allows the audience to feel that they understand the character and see layers of meaning.”

Further, the director said that Murphy“hasn’t let success change him”making it another obvious factor to work closely with the actor.
Every Nolan project has always been the most anticipated movie, andOppenheimeris no exception. There’s stability in the images of both the actor and the director, there is no doubt about that. So, fans can assume the best coming out of the movie diving deep into the mind of the 20th-century scientist.

Christopher Nolan Thinks Cillian Murphy is Perfect Fit forOppenheimer
Gillian Murphy had patience, he waited for Nolan’s call for the big role in his $100 million movie. And Nolan’s familiarity and closeness with the actor were a highlighting factor for choosing him as the father of the atomic bomb.
“I think Oppenheimer, of all the characters that I’ve seen Cillian take on and of all the characters that I’ve dealt with in my work, is one of the most complicated and layered people,”Nolan said.
“Cillian is one of the few talents able to explore those different layers, and to project that level of complexity in a way that allows you to understand the character.”
Murphy too, was pretty enthusiastic about the role.“I think it’s the best script I ever read,”the28 Days Lateractor said. Interestingly, Nolan’s original script for Murphy was in the first person. Murphy immediately asked the director to know that“He wanted it to be solely from Oppenheimer’s perspective,”Murphy said.
“And I think the film is sensational. As a person who loves films — I’m not saying it ’cos I’m in the f***ing thing, I hate looking at myself — but as a lover of film, as a cinephile, I’m a Chris Nolan fan.”
TheOppenheimertrailer stored promising anticipation and it seems the Nolan-Murphy collaboration will bring the 20th-century darkness revolving around the character.
Oppenheimeris scheduled to release in theatre on 11 August 2025.
