Criticisms Of Michael Mann’sFerrari

Ever since its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival,Michael Mann’sFerrarihas divided critics. While some praise the performances of the film’s leads, Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz, others seem to have an issue with the overdramatized sequences from Mann.

Noted Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino criticized the film for casting American actors instead of native Italians for the film. Ryan Lattanzio, a critic atIndieWire, pointed out how Driver and Shailene Woodley struggled with their Italian accents. He wrote,

“Ferrari…is as operatic a work as you’d expect from the master of sprawling crime dramas like ‘Heat’ and ‘The Insider,’ but it’s also sillier and lighter on its pedals in ways that work both for and against it. Driver and especially Shailene Woodley — who plays Lina Lardi, Enzo’s side piece and the mother of his eventual heir Piero Lardi Ferrari — struggle palpably with the Italian accents of their characters.”

The critic also wrote in his review that the film was fun despite these flaws as it never takes itself too seriously. He also called the racing scenes ‘wince-inducing’.
