James Cameron’sTitanicdidn’t become a major success out of nothing. Apparently, while making the cult classic, the director implemented extreme steps in order to ensure perfection and brilliance. And those stories from behind the set are as entertaining as the movie itself.

According to the director, back thenTitanicwas the most expensive film ever made, and there were certain unprecedented issues with complex engineering and massive resources. However, instead of panicking with the issues, James Cameron brilliantly handled the problem that gave the film an added value.

Miscalculations and Scaling Issues WithTitanic

Making movies back in the 1990s wasn’t as easy as it is right now. Working onAvatarfilms, James Cameron addressed the issues that he faced previously vs the recent ones. Recalling his 1997 movieTitanicduring his interview with theLos Angeles Times, Cameron discussed the issues he faced with technology.

While in today’s day and age, it’s easier to use smaller set pieces extended via CGI, it wasn’t the case back in 1997. Recalling his most expensive film of the year, the director discussed how they faced the unprecedented issue of complex engineering and massive resources. He mentioned how the problem caused panic around the Studio.

“We never panicked. The studio panicked. It’s our job not to panic.”

Admitting that the miscalculations in logistics were present before the cameras rolled, James Cameron mentioned it was something that they had never experienced before. Thus, handling the problem was a new and tricky thing for the director.

James Cameron Brilliantly Handled the Problem

However, James Cameron handled the situation brilliantly and even saved hundreds of dollars on set design and production. Despite initially feeling nervous about the problem, since it was something that they had never faced before, Cameron mentioned wondering if they would be able to collect the production cost.

“The scale of everything was beyond anything we could imagine in terms of our prior experience. At the time we thought, wow, there’s no way this movie could ever make its money back. It’s just impossible. Well, guess what?”

Eventually,James Camerongot an idea of how to handle scale-to-frame issues without investing any further into set designing. Discussing with theLos Angeles Times, the director stated his terrific plan that did wonders and got them “extra million dollars of value out of casting”.

“We only cast short extras so it made our set look bigger. Anybody above 5’8”, we didn’t cast them. It’s like we got an extra million dollars of value out of casting.”
