Released in 2019,Jojo Rabbitwas inspired by Christine Leunen’s novelCaging Skiesbut is not a literal adaptation of the source material.Taika Waititi‘s starring as an imaginary goofy version of Adolf Hiter was a bit that he added on his own, to have a more lighter take on World War II, since it wasn’t his cup of tea to make a dark and tragic one.

The movie earned high praise for the way it shed light on the themes of Nazi propaganda, blind fanaticism, and fascism through innocence, friendship, and empathy while also blending humor and comedy. Despite the movie winning an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, it wasn’t a movie that studios were looking to make. After multiple setbacks, Waititi was approached by Searchlight to make the movie but had one condition: that he play Hitler.
“I just didn’t want to have myself get clouded with negative shit while trying to play someone so evil. But my ego is so massive, it was bound to happen.”

Not only was his being a Jew the most ironic part of him playing Hitler, but the absurdity and satire he brought to the character helped subtly highlight the irrationality of beliefs propagated by Nazi ideology.
