In the film, Mark Wahlberg plays the role of a science teacher trying to escape an unexplained number of violent deaths happening across the country. It was the director’s least successful film of all time.

In a discussion about the film a few years after its release, Wahlberg revealed that he didn’t know how to explain the film. The actor shared,

“Fk it. It is what it is. Fking trees, man. The plants. F**k it. You can’t blame me for not wanting to attempt to play a science teacher. At least I wasn’t playing a cop or a crook.”

M. Night Shyamalan on Mark Wahlberg criticizing the film

In conversation with Vulture,The Sixth Sensedirector was asked if he was bothered byMark Wahlberg’s criticism of his film,The Happening. The director shared that he was not affected and said,

“Since that would be the only case of that happening — no. But really, no. It’s totally his call. However, he wants to interpret it.”

Shyamalan said thatThe Happeningdidn’t land well with the audiences because of its tone. He shared that he had hoped the movie would land like a B-movie, but viewers were left unsure if they should take the events of the film seriously or as a comedy.

Shyamalan said,

“I think it’s a consistent kind of farce humor. You know, like ‘The Blob.’ The key to ‘The Blob’ is that it just never takes itself that seriously.”

The Happeningwas a thriller film, written, directed, and produced by M. Night Shyamalan. It was released in 2008 and featured Mark Wahlberg,Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo, and Betty Buckley in prominent roles. The film grossed $163 million worldwide.
