Mel Gibson is an extremely controversial figure in the film industry. Though he is one of the biggest names in Hollywood, having a part in many massively successful productions likeBraveheart, theMad Maxfilm series,Lethal Weapon, andHacksaw Ridge, he has created quite a reputation for himself, having been accused of many, very serious, things throughout his career.

It would seem, however, that the actor is trying to be a better person. His latest project,The Continentalstands as a spinoff to Keanu Reeves’ iconic franchise,John Wick. With it, he has proven once again that separating the art from the artist can at times be beneficial. It was in his filmBlood Fatherthat he saw himself as a leading man and a father figure at the same time.

Mel Gibson’s Attempt to Redemption
While talking toThe Guardian,Mel Gibsonaddressed his then-upcoming movie,Blood Father.Although the film shows him as a man willing to go to any length in order to protect his daughter, there may have been a message he was trying to send out. Gibson’s reputation has been a rollercoaster ride of positives and negatives.
“I like to be in the driver’s seat. It’s kind of the dad version of the action guy – that’s a genre now. Very American. It’s about a relationship, and you may’t have a stronger bond than the parent-kid relationship. And I liked the character. A man with many transgressions, but willing to redeem himself.”

Thanks to that, he understands that any accusation put on him has serious consequences. As he explained his character, he talked in much broader terms, bringing in the fact that he enjoyed playing the character, someone who is in dire need of redeeming himself and is willing to do just that. Ironically enough, it could have been something to do with his past as well. One which was filled with a redemption story from sinner to saint.

What Makes Mel Gibson A Sinner?
There have been many instances in Mel Gibson’s career that his integrity and how he is as a person has been put into question by the media due to many different accusations. The film,Blood Father, came out in 2016, after which was his widely adored film,Hacksaw Ridge, both of which came after the actor went on a hiatus. The reason for this was probably the fact that he was basically shut down by everyone in the film industry following many different incidents.
Be it the time of his Malibu DUI arrest in 2006, his very anti-Semitic and racist comments, or his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his children, Oksana Grigorievait accusing him of physical abuse, it would not be far-fetched for one to assume that Gibson was trying to send some message with this film.
