In a world where there are cinematic juggernauts like the already-established MCU and the upcoming DCU that dominate superhero cinema, Amazon Studios brought usThe Boys.And as if out of nowhere, the show took off and became an overnight success, shooting Antony Starr’s career, the face of Homelander in the series, into the stratosphere.
Portraying the lead antagonist in the series, the star was able to leave a lasting impression on the audience with his spectacular performance of the strongest sociopathic supes. But it’s not like he loves every single thing about his character, in fact, when he came to know some fans of the show actually idolized his role, he was concerned, and said that he hated that fans did this.
Antony Starr Reveals He Hates The Fact That Fans Idolize Homelander
When it comes to superheroes, most people think them to be for kids, then again, they have shown us the shadows around the light that they shine upon the world countless times before. But Prime Video’sThe Boysshows the absolute visceral reality of the world if there were to be actual superheroes, and no one can represent that better thanAntony Starrwith Homelander in the series.
Despite his character being an unhinged, all-powerful, yet equally mentally warped supes, some fans have come to idolize the character in real life.
In a recent interview this year with theLos Angeles Times, theBansheestar talked about how the role in Prime Video’s flagship series changed his life. He said that while this couldn’t get any better for him, he does have one gripe with his character, and it has to do with the fact that it seems to attract fans to him so much that they start to look up to him or get stuck to him.
He added that the whole point of the show is to prove to the world that he’s one of the worst and most evil individuals out there, and no one should be attracted to him in any way. He said:
“There’s a very strange thing that’s happened with the character, though he is clearly not a good guy. A lot of people have glommed onto him. There’s a weird element out there that actually kind of idolize him. I’ve seen some sh*t on Twitter and I’m like, ‘Wait, What?You are missing the point entirely!’”
While he still loves to play the character in the series, he doesn’t want the fans of the show to try and become anything close to what Homelander is.
What Makes Homelander Such An Intriguing Character?
Apart from possessing superpowers that everyone would love to have, what makes Homelander so intriguing is that he’s not someone larger than life, but one who’s terrifyingly close to reality.
While he may have been created as the evil version of Superman, what makes him scare the daylights out of people is that he’s just another prominent public figure who’s fueled by narcissism and corrupted with power. Only this time, the power that he wields is not just status and wealth, but laser eyes, super strength, and an unhinged mind that breeds carnage.
